Named after Coronado's lieutenant Hernando de Alvarado, the Alvarado Hotel was built in 1902 and was part of the Fred Harvey House chain. http://www.harveyhouses.net/states/newmexico/nmhouses.html. It was designed in the California Mission style. Fred Harvey was an entrepreneur who partnered with the ATSFR and built a national chain of high standard restaurants, hotels, and retail stores in the train stations.
